As President Obama enters his second term this month, he faces many challenges both at home and abroad. While he may have views on how each of these should be handled, he will realistically only be able to make an impact in some of them during the time allotted to him. However, as he will not run for another term, he can risk more and focus on the goals he desires without worrying about reelection. In your opinion, what should President Obama focus his second term on? Should foreign or domestic affairs be on the forefront? And within these, which problems should be prioritized?
As President Obama is pushing for stricter gun laws and the state of New York just passed new laws restricting gun ownership, here are the current results of the poll we put up last month, asking what can be done to prevent violent tragedies like those in Connecticut. We asked what measures people see as effective in aiding to avoid such incidents, allowing respondents to choose between a legal approach (gun laws), a cultural approach (less glorification of violence), or a combination of those. Half the respodents (47%) hail from the United States, one quarter from the U.K., and the rest were from other European countries, the Middle East, or East Asia. At the time of this post, the results are as follows:

In lights of the recent gun violence in the U.S., many are reacting strongly, once again, to the issue of gun control. But are there measures the country can take in order to prevent such future events? And if so, is the cause of the violence one that can be solved through legislation or is it a social and cultural issue? Many voices claim that the glorification of violence in the media, even the constant reporting of such tragic events, aids in encouraging such acts. Thus should the U.S. focus on gun control laws or the violent culture in the country?

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the European Union (EU) “for over six decades contributed to the advancement of peace and reconciliation, democracy and human rights in Europe.†Many are critical of this award claiming that the current European crisis, weapons experts, and past regional violence, especially in the Balkans, demonstrate that the EU has not achieved “fraternity between nations,†nor was always a “peace congress,†as written in Alfred Nobel’s will, after whom the prize is named. A few years ago, many criticized the Nobel Committee for awarding U.S. President Barack Obama the award, just when he began his first term. In the light of these recent critiques, has the Nobel Peace Prize lost its proper worth and meaning?

According to a recent report from the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO), phasing out the iconic $1 dollar bill and replacing it with coins will save the taxpayer $4.4 billion over 30 years, due to the latter’s superior durability (coins last 30 years, whereas bills are typically good for 5 years). Should it stay or should it go?
A new Enviroment/Climate poll has been created.
The 18th United Nations Conference on Climate Change is being hosted in Qatar, with representatives from over 200 nations attending. The talks will focus on fighting global warming, extending the Kyoto protocol, and raising money to help poor nations. Even though the talks have been going on for two decades, they have not met their goal of reducing emissions. One reason for this is that developed and developing nations do not see eye to eye on the issue. Developing nations wish to grow and developed nations do not wish to be less competitive, therefore they are not willing to enforce restricting protocols. A new treaty is supposed to be signed by 2015, but with the process moving slowly, will the UN talks bring about any change?

The United States is the only advanced economy whose workers have no legal right to paid holidays or paid annual leave. Any benefits an employee may have are provided by her employer on a voluntary basis, but even these benefits are not as great as in other industrialized nations. This results in U.S. workers working more hours than their counterparts and lower wage workers having access to minimal vacation benefits, if at all. Time away from work has been linked with improved health, an area where the United States is facing numerous challenges caused by stress, termed the silent killer. At the same time, the U.S. economy is still trying to recover from its recession and paid leave would increase business costs in the short term. Should the United States join other industrialized nations and institute paid leave and holidays laws?

The government of Colombia and the FARC rebel group are holding peace talks this week in Cuba, trying to bring an end to a conflict sparked over land reform five decades ago. Both sides agreed to a truce to last until January, at which point they hope to have an agreement. Negotiations have been attempted before, but real progress has yet to be achieved. Will this time be different?
