Time magazine names Bernanke ‘Person of the Year’

Wednesday, December 16th, 2009

WASHINGTON, Dec 16 (Reuters) – Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke was named Person of the Year by Time magazine on Wednesday, a highly visible show of support at a time he seeks to beat back proposals that would erode the central bank’s authority and independence.

Time credited Bernanke with creative leadership that ensured 2009 would be a year of recovery, however weak, rather than a catastrophic second Great Depression.

At VoteGlobal.com, we have Bernanke featured in two polls: Top US Politician of 2009, and Worst US Politician of 2009. Those polls are still open, vote today! So far, VoteGlobal.com voters haven’t exactly put Bernanke on the radar on either of those polls, only 2% consider him the ‘Worst U.S. Politician of the year’ (Obama taking the lead in that one), and just 3% consider him tops in the ‘Top U.S. Politician of 2009′ Poll (Obama also taking the lead in that one!). Colorado’s Green Rush: Medical marijuana

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Denver, Colorado ( from CNN) — Driving down Broadway, it’s easy to forget you are in the United States. Amid the antique stores, bars and fast-food joints occupying nearly every block are some of Denver’s newest businesses: medical marijuana dispensaries.
The locals call this thoroughfare “Broadsterdam.” As in Amsterdam, Netherlands, these businesses openly advertise their wares, often with signs depicting large green marijuana leaves.
“The American capitalist system is working,” said attorney and medical marijuana advocate Rob Corry.
It’s a matter of supply and demand.
“The demand has always been there,” he said, “and the demand is growing daily because more doctors are willing to do this, and now businesses, entrepreneurs, mom-and-pop shops are cropping up to create a supply.”
Colorado voters legalized medical marijuana in 2000. For years, patients could get small amounts from “caregivers,” the term for growers and dispensers who could each supply only five patients. In 2007, a court lifted that limit and business boomed. Read More…

Do you support or oppose the UKs Digital Economy Bill?

Saturday, December 12th, 2009

A new Politics/Elections poll has been created.

The Digital Economy Bill, as outlined in the Queen’s speech in November 2009,
includes a shake-up of the radio spectrum, a classification system for video games and plans to tackle illegal file-sharing. The so-called “three strikes” element of the bill would give regulator Ofcom new powers to disconnect persistent net pirates. Lobby organisation The Open Rights Group is urging people to contact their MP to oppose the plans.
It will have to go through various readings and drafts before it becomes law. Do you support it?

Carbon Trading (also known as emission trading, cap and trade, or cap and tax) is an administrative approach used to control pollution by providing economic incentives for achieving reductions in the emissions of pollutants. Many critics say it not a real solution, as it allows ’sanctioned’ pollution levels and has to much government control. What do you think?
