Jewish settlers in West Bank building curb protest
Wednesday, December 9th, 2009Thousands of Jewish settlers and their supporters are staging a rally in Jerusalem in protest at a curb on settlement building in the West Bank.
Demonstrators gathered outside the residence of PM Benjamin Netanyahu, days after he ordered a 10-month lull in permits for new settlement homes.
The order followed US calls for a total freeze in settlement building.
Israel said the move was aimed at helping restart peace talks, but Palestinians said it was insufficient.

Criminals jailed for less than four years could be given the right to vote under government proposals. Ministers have been forced to lift the traditional ban on inmates voting to comply with a European court ruling. But they stress the most serious offenders will still be banned from casting a vote. The Tories urged ministers to keep the ban – but the Liberal Democrats accused Labour of lacking the “courage” to scrap it sooner. Should they be allowed to vote?

Swiss ban on minarets was a vote for tolerance and inclusion
Friday, December 4th, 2009The recent Swiss referendum that bans construction of minarets has caused controversy across the world. There are two ways to interpret the vote. First, as a rejection of political Islam, not a rejection of Muslims. In this sense it was a vote for tolerance and inclusion, which political Islam rejects. Second, the vote was a revelation of the big gap between how the Swiss people and the Swiss elite judge political Islam.
