UK Elections: Parties and Leaders

Monday, April 26th, 2010

On May 6, 45 million Britons will have the opportunity to vote for a new Member of Parliament to represent their area. The party with the most elected members will then form a new government. Generally, the leader of the winning party—the party that holds more than 50 percent of seats in the House of Commons—will serve as prime minister. Though as the BBC notes, if no party wins enough seats to form an outright majority government—a situation referred to as a hung Parliament—“it is possible that two other parties could decide to work together in a coalition if they can rely on more than half the votes of MPs.”

Palin Gets Biggest Liar Award

Monday, December 21st, 2009

A panel of experts ruled her claim the Obama administration was planning to introduce “death panels” was chosen as the most misleading statement of 2009.
Palin, 45, made the claim on her Facebook page at the height of the debate over President Obama’s plans to reform the US health care system. She wrote: “My parents or my baby with Down syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama’s ‘death panel’ so his bureaucrats can decide whether they are worthy of health care.”
But the website PolitiFact.com found that there were never any plans to introduce so called “death panels” to decide who should live or die.

Karzai ousts two over corruption…

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan President Hamid Karzai took a step on Saturday towards reassuring wary Western allies by appointing a new cabinet that sheds two prominent politicians accused of corruption and retains pro-American leaders in key posts.

After weeks of consultation with Western diplomats, Karzai selected a new political team that seeks to mollify American officials who have pressed him to crack down on corruption and assuage Afghan warlords who backed him during the fraud-tainted presidential election.

Karzai opted to retain the ministers of finance, defense, and interior, all of whom will play central roles in building a credible Afghan security force capable of eventually replacing U.S. and other NATO forces in Afghanistan.

The Afghan president also sidelined the current minister of mines and minister of religious affairs, both of whom have been accused of political corruption. Read more on this article…

Colorado’s Green Rush: Medical marijuana

Monday, December 14th, 2009

Denver, Colorado ( from CNN) — Driving down Broadway, it’s easy to forget you are in the United States. Amid the antique stores, bars and fast-food joints occupying nearly every block are some of Denver’s newest businesses: medical marijuana dispensaries.
The locals call this thoroughfare “Broadsterdam.” As in Amsterdam, Netherlands, these businesses openly advertise their wares, often with signs depicting large green marijuana leaves.
“The American capitalist system is working,” said attorney and medical marijuana advocate Rob Corry.
It’s a matter of supply and demand.
“The demand has always been there,” he said, “and the demand is growing daily because more doctors are willing to do this, and now businesses, entrepreneurs, mom-and-pop shops are cropping up to create a supply.”
Colorado voters legalized medical marijuana in 2000. For years, patients could get small amounts from “caregivers,” the term for growers and dispensers who could each supply only five patients. In 2007, a court lifted that limit and business boomed. Read More…

Jewish settlers in West Bank building curb protest

Wednesday, December 9th, 2009

Thousands of Jewish settlers and their supporters are staging a rally in Jerusalem in protest at a curb on settlement building in the West Bank.
Demonstrators gathered outside the residence of PM Benjamin Netanyahu, days after he ordered a 10-month lull in permits for new settlement homes.
The order followed US calls for a total freeze in settlement building.
Israel said the move was aimed at helping restart peace talks, but Palestinians said it was insufficient.

Swiss ban on minarets was a vote for tolerance and inclusion

Friday, December 4th, 2009

The recent Swiss referendum that bans construction of minarets has caused controversy across the world. There are two ways to interpret the vote. First, as a rejection of political Islam, not a rejection of Muslims. In this sense it was a vote for tolerance and inclusion, which political Islam rejects. Second, the vote was a revelation of the big gap between how the Swiss people and the Swiss elite judge political Islam.

D.C. Council votes to legalize same-sex marriage

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Washington DC Council voted Tuesday to legalize same-sex marriage in the District, as the city moves quickly to join five states in allowing gay couples to marry. After months of debate, the council passed the bill 11 to 2. It still must take a second vote in two weeks before the measure can go to Mayor Adrian M. Fenty (D), who has said he will sign it.

If the bill survives a required congressional review period, the District will join New Hampshire, Connecticut, Iowa, Vermont and Massachusetts in allowing same-sex marriage.

Intolerance of other religions is a cornerstone of Islamic Faith, so why are they so upset about a few minarets?

Monday, November 30th, 2009

As expected, Muslim reaction to the vote for banning construction of further minarets in Swltzerland was quite negative. Outrage. Anger. Retaliation. Protest, etc. But what of Muslim states treatment of Christian Churches, or, for that matter, any other religion?

In Pakistan, freedom of religious worship is a constitutional right, but its government openly sets limits on the practice and there have been growing attacks by Militant Groups on both Christian and Shiite targets recently. District-level governments there allegedly ‘routinely’ refuse to grant permission to construct non-muslim places of worship.

In Egypt, Christians must, by law, receive permission of local muslim communities before new construction is allowed. In Saudi Arabia, the public practice of ANY faith other than Islam is illegal. In Indonesia, Hindu, Buddhist and Christian churches or mosques have struggled to receive building permits, and many existing ones have been forced closed.

Not to mention, of course, those states adopting Shariah Law, which is completely intolerant of any other faith but Islam on it’s soil.

So why condemn the people of a country for simply stating what they want, in their own country? Must all countries bow to intolerance and extreme sensitivity? Muslims outnumber Christians, it’s a fact, but countries where people are free to choose, by democratic action, what may or may not become law, outnumber the countries where religious law is absolute.

I choose to live in a country where I am free to choose my religion, my faith, my appearance, even. It’s called a democracy, and, apparently, even that might be illegal under Shariah Law.
