In recent news, Switzerland voted to ban construction of new minarets, Islamic and other leaders condemning the move, despite the fact that Islamic states have strict controls over all other faiths, some even making practice of faiths other than Islam illegal. So why the double standard? Are Western Governments giving ground too much? Are Western countries giving up their identities while Islamic states change nothing?

Started on 1st December 1988, World AIDS Day is about raising money, increasing awareness, fighting prejudice and improving education. The World AIDS Day theme for 2009 is ‘Universal Access and Human Rights’. World AIDS Day is important in reminding people that HIV has not gone away, and that there are many things still to be done. According to UNAIDS estimates, there are now 33.4 million people living with HIV, including 2.1 million children. During 2008 some 2.7 million people became newly infected with the virus and an estimated 2 million people died from AIDS. Are we doing enough to combat AIDS – in developing and Western countries?

Islamic nations are mounting a campaign for an international treaty to protect religious symbols and beliefs from mockery – essentially, a ban on blasphemy.
Algeria and Pakistan have taken the lead in lobbying to bring the matter to a vote in the U.N. General Assembly. Such a ban would face great resistance in Western nations that enshrine freedom of expression as a fundamental right. What do you think?
