Will the News of The World phone hacking scandal bring down the government of UK Prime Minister David Cameron?

A new Politics/Elections poll has been created.

English tabloid, The News of the World is closing following a political storm over its journalism practices. The 168-year-old tabloid is accused of hacking into the mobile phones of crime victims, celebrities and politicians. The Met Police say there are 4,000 possible targets named in seized documents.

The newspaper and its executive are closely allied to the Conservative Party in the UK and disgraced former eidtor Andy Coulson was formerly David Cameron’s director of communications.

Will the scandal grow to engulf the government?

Is Russia correct in saying the rest of the world should “mind its own business” regarding the conviction of Mikhail Khodorkovsky for allegedly embezzling funds from his company, Yukos Oil?

A new Politics/Elections poll has been created.

Russia accused Western powers of trying to influence the outcome of Mikhail Khodorkovsky’s fraud trial. Russia says the rest of the world should “mind its own business.”

The U.S. White House and other foreign governments said that the trial was an abuse of Russia’s legal system for improper ends that threatened Russia’s relationships with the rest of the world and international business community. The U.S. State Department has defended its right to speak out on the issue.

France’s parliament is voting whether to ban burqa-like Muslim veils. France’s lower house of parliament will likely approve a ban on face-covering veils Tuesday, and the Senate will probably follow suit in September. Some say it violates France’s Constitution. Do you support it? Vote here.

Belgium – Two Countries?

A new Politics/Elections poll has been created.

Belgium is holding parliamentary elections which could bring the country closer to a constitutional split. The Flemish separatist party, the New Flemish Alliance (NVA), is expected to do well in the vote. Belgium is in effect two separate communities held together by a bi-lingual political system: 4 million French speakers in Wallonia, 6.5 million Dutch speakers in Flanders for a total of just 7.7 million voters. From the BBC at 01:02 GMT, Monday, 14 June 2010: Belgium’s Flemish separatist party, the New Flemish Alliance (NVA), has emerged as the largest force in parliament, near-complete election results show. The NVA took 27 seats in the 150-member assembly, bringing the country closer to a split. The party, led by Bart De Wever, wants to more fully divide the country between Dutch-speaking Flanders and French-speaking Wallonia. But the NVA would have to form a coalition with Wallonian parties. Click here for full article.

A new Politics/Elections poll has been created.

Gordon Brown announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party after leading Labour to a manjor loss in May elections.The new leader will be elected through a ballot of MPs, MEPs, party members and members of affiliated organisations such as trade unions, with the outcome being announced at the party conference in September.
The ballot will be Labour’s first contested leadership election since 1994. Gordon Brown did not face a challenge in 2007. The lsit below is not confrimed but based on press statements and will be updated progressively. Candidates need the backing of 33MPs to get on the ballot.

Is it time for the UK to change the First Past the Post sytem?

UPDATED JULY 5TH, 2010 The BBC says a referendum on changing the UK’s voting system is planned for May 5th, 2011.
A vote on changing from first-past-the-post to the alternative vote (AV) could be held on the day of Holyrood, Welsh Assembly and English local elections. But the government must first get it through Parliament and may face a rebellion by Tory MPs. View the full BBC article.

The Electoral Commission says “19th Century political system continues to deny millions of voters a say in our politics, producing unrepresentative governments and unaccountable politicians. It stands in the way of 21st Century politics.”

Poland’s parliament speaker has set June 20, 2010 as the date for an early presidential election after the death of President Lech Kaczynski in a plane crash. Preliminary Candidates listed. More to follow when officially announced. Deadline for candidacy submissions: May 6.
